Account Director

Reports to: Client Services Director

Purpose of role:

  • Provide insight and value to client accounts to secure, build and retain long-term, profitable relationships for the agency
  • To enhance the agency revenue, profit and reputation in keeping with strategic and business goals
  • To manage and motivate project team to deliver profitable projects and satisfied clients
  • To support and contribute to the development of Contagious by creating and maintaining positive relationships with clients, suppliers and the Contagious team
  • To contribute to a consistently creative, friendly and relaxed working environment
  • Ensure our creative approach is always strategically led and live by our mantra of ‘Never in Isolation’ by encouraging the cross-fertilisation of ideas from our specialist teams


For Clients
The role of Account Director is to bridge the knowledge and creative gap between the client and the agency to ensure that the agency is meeting the client’s needs, both proactively and in response to client instigated briefs. Clients expect that the Account Director will:

  • Be a trusted advisor and strategic creative partner
  • Bring industry and design knowledge and inspiration to the table at all times – including between live briefs
  • Understand clients’ business objectives and challenges and devise strategic and tactical campaigns and activities to address these
  • Represent agency team at briefings, reviews and campaigns
  • Negotiate and be accountable for relationship structure and ensure thorough knowledge and adherence of the Terms and Conditions agreed with the client on relevant accounts
  • Work on the clients’ behalf to keep activities focussed on business objectives and knows if and when to review or redirect efforts
  • Guide and champion creative work that can deliver stand out results for the client business
  • Conduct regular reviews to measure success and continually improve on client/agency ROI
  • Help to support and develop less experienced members of client team to achieve overall objectives if required

For Contagious
Responsible for the development of key portfolio account strategies, client plans and projects, our Account Directors are comfortable with campaign financials and responsible for managing and reporting on these to both client and agency. Providing an impeccable service to clients day-to-day, the AD will actively develop these client relationships over time for the benefit of the business. Specifically:

  • Delivering to annual client satisfaction, revenue and profitability targets on named accounts set by business plan and CSD
  • Contributing to NB targets by raising agency profile and reputation
  • Responsible to CSD and agency Principals for profitability, growth, and risk management on specific named accounts
  • Solely responsible for defining scope and fees for projects on named accounts
  • Will support CSD and less experienced team members to scope and cost on larger projects when needed
  • Writes proposals and tender documents that will convert opportunities and RFPs to live projects
  • Curates the right team to deliver (agency, client and partner)
  • Is capable of interpreting client needs to draft initial briefs then develop in partnership with client
  • Is able and willing to write content where required and writes brand and VI guidelines in partnership with designers
  • Collates and manages internal team assigned to named accounts/projects, resourcing external partners and suppliers when necessary
  • Attends networking and profile building activities on agency behalf, including evening events where needed
  • Partners with other AD’s if applicable, to manage and co-ordinate assignment and support of shared team members across accounts to deliver best results for all clients and agency
  • Participates in project reviews with other senior personnel and implements learnings and solutions accordingly
  • Provides input to staff reviews on request
  • Is growth and reputation focussed

For Creative Team
The Account Director is in regular contact with clients and is clearly their representative within the agency placing the Account Director in the position of enabling the creative team to deliver an informed solution to the brief that will delight clients. The Account Director:

  • Partners with senior creative to continually drive for excellence and growth
  • Knows the client’s business, industry and team members better than anyone else and is the go-to advisor on client insight, industry overview and competitor knowledge
  • Can assist with creative writing, guidelines, and some content creation

For Client Services
A strong team player, the Account Director works independently on some accounts and supports the CSD on others. The Account Director:

  • Is team leader of assigned team on their named accounts
  • Manages team make-up and work allocation on named accounts
  • First point of contact for client knowledge on named accounts and a valuable source of industry and competitor knowledge for the wider team
  • Shares knowledge and experience, providing guidance to less experienced CS team members on client, internal and partner matters

Skills and Experience

  • Comfortable and credible with C-Level relationships
  • Knowledge, experience and personality to present as agency lead. (8+ years in senior agency or client roles)
  • Proven ability to create and deliver on account development strategy
  • Business acumen to recognise business opportunity and risk. With confidence to make decisions and respond accordingly
  • Experience of team building, leadership and client and colleague management in agency environment


  • Delivery of projects to a consistently high standard
  • Maintaining excellent agency and client relationships at all times
  • Accurate and timely financial reporting for clients and agency to enable effective decision making
  • By demonstration of working practices and pro-active knowledge sharing, support the development of SAM, AM and AE for a strong CS team
  • Manage a portfolio of key clients to contribute to overall business targets and goals – to the value, measures and profit margins defined in annual goal setting
  • Retain, grow and attract client accounts
